Calero was detained by the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service in December 2002 as he was returning from a reporting assignment in Mexico. Deportation proceedings were initiated and Calero, in association with the Political Rights Defense Fund, responded with a public campaign to fight the charges leveled against him.
